Well, first of all, I think this discussion topic would perfectly fit into the “Olympics” community from LeChuck …. but I would still like to answer it in this discussion forum.
I can only think of the following reasons:
- India is a hot country, the conditions might make it difficult for people to exercise in such kind of climate (for most sports).
- The focus might lie more on education (IT, medicine, etc.) rather than on sports. I think people’s perception regarding sports might have to change a bit. To me it seems as if the image of sports in general is not the best and considered particularly prestigious. Even though India is very good in cricket.
- It reminds me of some Bollywood movies in which I also got the impression that sports (Apne in terms of boxing, Iqbal – The Rampur Express in terms of cricket and Chak de India in terms of female hockey) is not taken particularly seriously by (some) Indian people themselves.
- For certain kind of sports the infrastructure might not be given.
- A lack of financial resources or sponsors might make it more difficult to get a chance to make it in sports.
- As far as I know, sports (physical education) is not a compulsory subject at school in India. So, if you want to become good and famous in sports it would be a good idea to start it in your early years.
